Congestion at the Panama Canal

At the Panama Canal, one of the most important waterways in the world, through which about 6 % of the world’s trade passes, freighters are currently jammed as a result of the ongoing drought. According to the canal authorities, the waiting time for ship passages is nine to eleven days. LCL cargo ships even have to wait up to 18 days for passage, according to statistics.

Due to the persistent drought, the daily number of ship passages had to be reduced. The maximum draught with which ships are allowed to pass through the canal also had to be reduced. Global supply chains are affected by these measures, and costs in world trade are rising.
